Five balls numbered 1 to 5 are suspended using separate thread pairs ( 1,2 ) ( 2,4 ) ( 4,1 ) show electrostatic attraction while pairs ( 2,3 ) ( 4,5 ) show repulsion therefore ball1 must beAnswer says that 1 is neutral but if that is so , how can (1,2), (4,1) show attraction ?? Even if induction occurs , how can we conclude unless the configuration is given ??

Here the charges on the balls 2 and 3 are similar. Also that on 4 and 5 is similar. But the balls 2 and 4 attract each other. Therefore, if the charge on ball 2 is positive, then that on ball 5 must be negative. But ball 1 is attracted both by balls 2 and 5. This is possible only if ball 1 is ‘neutral’.
