why is A.C. voltage preferred over D.C.

It is preferred for the transmission of electricity because AC can be transformed. It is more efficient to transmit electrical over over long  distances at higher voltages and lower currents, and then to use transformers to step it down to lower voltages and higher currents. Transformers do not work with DC.
