here are some application of newton rings We used to have an experiment where a clean convex lens lay on a flat piece of glass while being illuminated with light. The contact point and the air gap as the lens curved away from the flat produced an interference pattern that could be observed using a microscope. A vernier scale on the microscope enabled measurements to be made.In practice it can be used in testing the quality of lenses.
