What will happen if galvanometer is having a high resistance when connected in series

Less current would flow and galvanometer would be safe .
BUT it would not be profitable at all because this would be good for only low
current values and the same problem of damage would take place at  very high currents 
instead of this, if you connect low resistance in parallel whatever currrent value you want can be measured without damage.
even very high currents can be measured by low range galvanometer as all current would flow through the shunt resistance.
