When one of the cells is wrongly attached, the overall potential output decrases by TWICE the value of emf of the wrong cell. This is because earlier, the potential that the cell was providing has been removed and now, instead, it opposes the potential of other cells by the same amount. Still the internal resistance of the system remains the same as all are stil connected in series.
