What are the uses of a potentiometer of 10wire used in a laboratory

and what is that 10wire ?? 
in potentiometer the wire used is made of manganin , beacuse manganin have a very low coefficient of resistance . 
also the voltage drop across the potentiometer is directly prop to length , and here the resistance may reduce to do so , 
and uses of potentiometer is
1- measure potential diffrence accurately 
2- comparing between the two emf .
