(B) May go either side depending on the absolute value of the electric field.
One must not get tricked about thinking of just one battery.
Consider a situation where the circuit contains two batteries in series, such that they have a tendency to drive currents in opposite directions.
In this case charge will go from negative to positive terminal in the battery, with higher voltage rating and in the opposite direction in the battery
