When S is closed, Y and Z become parallel and so the resistance whole circuit decreases, resulting in larger from the batteryto the lamp X. Hence X glows brigher.

Also since the resistance of the Y-Z combination decreases, smaller potential difference appears across the comination as compared to when Y was alone. Hence Y glows dimmer.
