equipotential surface is that surface in which the value of potential at every point of that region will be of equal value..
here , the work done for moving a charge from one place to other will be always 0.
for a single unit charge the shape of equipotential surface will be spherical,,  for a dipole or system of two charges the shape of the equipotential surface will be cylindrical,

Please post some questions related to this as it is very difficult to tell u the method as a theory....in equipotential method we just write symmetric paths and choose equipotential based on these path and then we redraw the complex circuit into easier one
