Dear student,
A potentiometer is an adjustable electro-mechanical transducer. The user can adjust a potentiometer freely; the adjustments made change the resistance over a circuit. As part of a circuit the potentiometer, or pot, can have a countless number of functions. The most basic pot consists of a tunable shaft, the casing housing the components of the pot and three terminals for wiring. Usually physically operated with an attached knob, two common uses for pots are as a volume control on a stereo system or musical instrument, or as a variable resistor controlling the speed of a motor or even the temperature of an oven.
