KOZHIKODE

After successful completion of Plus Two in science stream, your daughter can opt for the four-year Bachelor of Science (B.S.) course offered by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) or the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). She can also opt for the five-year research oriented integrated BS-MS programmes offered by Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs); National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER); and similar programmes offered by IITs.

Another option is B.Tech. in physical sciences offered by Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST).

Some of the Central universities also provide five-year Integrated Master of Science (MS) programmes for those who have passed Plus Two with high marks.

At IISc

IISc offers four-year BS course in physics, biology, chemistry, environmental science, materials and mathematics. The programme is designed to provide an in-depth interdisciplinary understanding. Those who have passed Plus Two with physics, chemistry and mathematics as the main subjects and have scored at least 60 per cent marks or equivalent grade are eligible for admission. The selection will be based on national-level tests such as Kishore Vaigyanik Prothsahan Yojana (KVPY) examination conducted by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Joint Entrance Examination (main) conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education and JEE Advanced conducted by the IITs and NEET-UG (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test for Medical undergraduate programmes). Details can be had from

At IITs

IIT Kanpur offers BS in physics, mathematics and scientific computing, and economics. IIT Madras offers five-year BS and MS dual-degree course in physics. IIT Kharagpur offers a five-year integrated M.Sc. course in physics. IIT Bombay conducts a five-year dual degree M.Tech. course in engineering physics with specialisation in nano science. IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati and Madras offer B.Tech. in engineering physics. The Indian School of Mines offers five-year integrated M.Sc. course in applied physics. Selection to all these courses will be on the basis of ranks obtained in JEE main and advanced tests. Those who have passed Plus Two or equivalent examination with physics, chemistry and mathematics with at least 60 per cent marks in aggregate are eligible to apply.

At IISERs

IISERs in Thiruvananthapuram, Pune, Bhopal, Mohali and Kolkata offer dual-degree BS-MS and Ph.D. programmes.

The key feature is the integration of undergraduate learning with cutting edge research in an interdisciplinary way and incorporating recent scientific developments. These institutes help students develop skills and scientific competency. Modern research facilities and digital libraries are an attraction.

Students joining these institutes for the integrated BS- MS programme will be awarded the Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) scholarships of Rs.5,000 a month.

In the 10 semester BS-MS course in physical, chemical, biological and mathematical sciences, students will have to undergo a comprehensive core course in basic sciences in the first two years. In the third and fourth year, they will have to major in the chosen subject among physics, chemistry, biology or mathematics, depending on their aptitude. Students will have to devote the final year to research in technical projects. Those who have passed Plus Two or equivalent with physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology with at least 60 per cent marks and have qualified the KVPY examination or IIT-JEE Advanced are eligible for admission. Students with high aggregate marks in Classes X and XII and the IISER’s science aptitude test can also get admission.

NISER

The National Institute for Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), offers five-year integrated M.Sc. programmes in physical, biological, chemical and mathematical sciences.

The University of Mumbai DAE (UM- DAE) Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (CBS), Mumbai, offers five-year integrated M.Sc. programmes in physical, chemical, mathematical and biological sciences. The degree is awarded by the University of Mumbai.

The Integrated Science Education and Research Centre under Visva Bharati, Santiniketan, offers a five-year integrated M.Sc. course in physical science

These three institutions have residential campuses. Students enrolled at the UM-DAE Centre and NISER will receive a fellowship of Rs.5,000 a month and other benefits. Students at Visva Bharati will be eligible to get INSPIRE fellowships. The selection to these three institutes (NISER, UM-DAE and Visva Bharati) is based on the score obtained in the National Entrance Screening Test (NEST). Those who have passed Plus Two or equivalent examinations in science subjects with at least 60 per cent marks and those awaiting Plus Two results may take the test.

At IIST

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Valiyamala, Thiruvananthapuram, under the Indian Space Research Organisation, offers a four-year B.Tech. programme in physical sciences, which focuses on astronomy, earth science, remote sensing and chemical systems. The selection on the basis of the score in the Joint Entrance Examinations (JEE- Main) conducted by CBSE and interview. Applicants should have scored at least 70 per cent marks in aggregate for physics, chemistry and mathematics in Plus Two and should have passed Class X with at least 70 per cent marks in aggregate to be eligible for admission. Those appearing for Plus Two or equivalent examination will also be considered. Union government meets the study expenses of IIST students and those who graduate with at least 65 per cent marks are eligible to be appointed as scientist/engineer in ISRO..

Other institutes

The Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS) offers integrated M.Sc. (Hons) programmes in biological sciences, chemistry, physics and mathematics. Selection is based on BITS Admission Test.

The University of Hyderabad offers an integrated M.Sc. course in physics. Selection is based on a national level entrance test and interview. In Kerala Kochi will be a test centre.

The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) conducts an integrated M.Sc. course in photonics. Selection is based on the CUSAT Common Admission Test. Those who have completed Plus Two with physics, chemistry and mathematics may take the test.

Amrita School of Arts and Science, Amritapuri, Kollam, offers an integrated M.Sc. course in physics and mathematics.

(This list is only indicative.)

Research

Those who are interested in research, should qualify the National Eligibility Test (NET) for Junior Research Fellowship and Lectureship conducted by CSIR- UGC. The IISc, Bangalore, provides excellent opportunities for first-class science graduates to do integrated Ph.D. programmes in physical, chemical, biological and mathematical sciences. Selection is based on Joint Admission Test (JAM) conducted by IITs.

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR), Bangalore, also provides integrated Ph.D. programmes in material science, chemical science and biological science for meritorious graduates in science and engineering.

IISERs in Thiruvananthapuram and Pune offer integrated Ph.D. programmes for meritorious science graduates.

The S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata, conducts an integrated M.Sc.- Ph.D. programme in physical sciences for graduates.

IIT-Kanpur conducts an integrated M.Sc.- Ph.D. programme in physics. Selection is based on JAM.

The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai; Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar; Nuclear Sciences Centre, New Delhi; Indian Institute of Astro Physics, Bangalore; the Harish Chandra Research Laboratory Allahabad; the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad; and so on provide research facilities in physics and related subjects.

Those who pass Masters degree in science subjects with high marks can appear for the Joint Screening Test for admission to Ph.D. programmes at these national-level institutes.
