The main difference between them is: In the ram-type turret lathes, the turret is mounted on a ram or slide which rides on a saddle whereas in a saddle type turret lathe there is no ram and with the turret mounted directly on a support (saddle) which slides on the bedways of the lathe.

A trained operator can accomplish more machining jobs with the engine lathe than with any other machine tool. Turret lathes and special purpose lathes are usually used in production or job shops for mass production or specialized parts. while basic engine lathes are usually used for any type of lathe work.

So capstan lathe is not a mass production mathe
