is there any diff. between monochromatic light and plane polarised light or both are same?

i also want to asked that in the phonomenon of double refraction..........the ordinary unpolarised light gets splitted into two plane polarised beams namely e-ray and o-ray....................although both of them are plane polarised, o-ray has constant refractive index whereas refractive index of e-ray changes continuosly.........why?
