The reason behind this is E.m.f. value.
EZn+2/Zn = -0.762
ECu+2/Cu = +0.34

Its because at anode oxidation takes place and at cathode reduction.Now the one with higher Reduction potential will undergo reduction which we can easily see through data is for Cu.Hence Cu rod is used as cathode to perform reduction.
