dear as v know that valency dos"nt change down the group so wat v hv to do is simply remembr the position of element in the periodic table .all d elements of group ist hv valency 1 n group 2nd elements hv 2 last goup hv 0 last but one hv 1 ,last but two hv 2 ,last but three hv 3 n so on

Dear Inu,

valence electrons can be determined by remember the number of electrons in the last shell. this can be done easily like this

first ring: 2 second ring: 8 third ring: 8

So if the number is 8 (oxygen) you know there will six valence electrons in the second shell

because it will be 2)6)

and oxygen will need two more electrons to become stable.

just remember the atomic number of the element usually learn the atmoic table  till 20. then write its electronic configuration in old form i.e for He, 2,0,0 then see the no. in the valence shell thats the valency. if more than 4 subtract from 8.

till 20elememts write the no of electrons in outermost shell.if less than 4 then this is the valency otherwise subtract from 8
