Dear Anumah,

The idea of electron-rich three-center bonding in hypervalentmolecules, proposed independently by Pimentel1 and Rundle,2celebrates this year its 50th anniversary. Since these seminalcontributions, many theoretical studies of the nature of thebonding in hypervalent molecules have been carried out. Theconcept has been probed in detail, extended, and limited.3-8Still, Rundle and Pimentel’s scheme remains the basis of thegenerally accepted view of hypervalency. It invokes a delocal-ized three-center σ-bonding scheme as shown in structure 1:three p orbitals combine to give one bonding, one nonbonding, and one antibonding molecular orbital (MO); the lower-lyingtwo orbitals are occupied.
