Dear Rajan,
The Étard reaction is a chemical reaction that involves the direct oxidation of an aromatic or heterocyclic bound methyl group to an aldehyde using chromyl chloride. It is named for the French chemist Alexandre Léon Étard (5 January 1852, Alençon - 1 May 1910). For example, toluene can be oxidised to benzaldehyde:
The Wurtz-Fittig reaction is the chemical reaction of aryl halides with alkyl halides and sodium metal to give substituted aromatic compounds.
The reaction is named after Charles-Adolphe Wurtz, who discovered in 1855 a similar reaction between two alkyl halides (Wurtz reaction), and Rudolph Fittig, who discovered that also aryl halides undergo this reaction. This Reaction is useful for production of Biphenyl compounds of type Ph-Ph .
