WHY ATOM HAS SMALLEST PARTICLE AS IT CONTAIN PROTON HAVING SOME MASS

Atom is considered to be the smallest particle that exists independently. Proton, do has less mass than an atom, but the independent existance of an proton is not possible, hence the smallest particle is considered to be an atom.
