WHAT HAPPENS TO MY COMPASS NEEDLES AT THE POLES?

At the poles the magnetic field lines are vertical to the surface . As such if u ll keep the compass in a horizontal plane the compass will show arbitary direction. However if u keep the compass in a vertical plane it will orient itself  in up-down direction. Thats why it cant be used to know directions in the poles with a compass.
