firstly you have to check limits and value of the function at critical points or the on the point you want [LHL=RHL=f(a)] for continuity 
Note not all continuous functions are differentials
For differentiability you should find and verify that[LHD=RHD]by first principle or sometime by directly differentiating .
 Now all the differential functions are continuous 
So I say you should first check differentiability than continuity
