A derivative is a rate of change. A second derivative is a rate of change of a rate of change. This is why the first derivative of position is velocity - velocity is the rate of change of position. The second derivative is acceleration, the rate of change of the rate of change (how velocity is changing). There's even a third derivative called jerkwhich measures the rate of change of acceleration.
