Rules for Change of Branch The Senate of IIT Bombay has approved new rules for change of branch which is effective fromthe JEEbatchof2011onwards.StudentsareeligibletoapplyforchangeofBranch/Programmeafter completingthefirsttwosemesters. Thefollowingrules/guidelineswillbeusedforconsidering applicationsforchange.

1.TheeligibilitycriteriatoapplyforchangeofBranch/Programmeare (a)completionofthecoursecreditsprescribedinthefirsttwosemesters,and (b)nobacklogattheendoffirstyearof4­yearB.Tech./5­yearM.Sc./DualDegree programmes,and (c)securedaCumulativePerformanceIndex(CPI) • ≥8.0forGeneralandOBCcategorystudents • ≥7.0forSC,STandPDcategorystudents

2.Applicationsfromstudentswhosatisfytheeligibilitycriteriaaretobeconsideredintheorderas givenbelow. • Allstudentswhosatisfythenormsspecifiedinrule3areallocatedfirst. • Studentswhosatisfythenormsspecifiedinrule4areallocatedsubsequently. • Studentswhosatisfythenormsspecifiedinrule5areallocatedattheend.

3.AstudentwithCPI≥9.0willbepermittedtochangefrombranchAtobranchB,strictlyinCPI order,providedthestrengthinbranchB,towhichthechangeisbeingsought,doesnotexceedits sanctionedstrengthbymorethan10%.ThereisnorestrictiononthestrengthofbranchA(maygo wellbelowitssanctionedstrength)duringtheapplicationofthisrule.Therequestofthisstudent willbereconsideredagain,strictlyinCPIorder,ifshe/hedoesnotviolatethenotexceeding10%of
sanctionedstrengthinthebranchcondition,duetoanotherstudentgettingtransferredtobranchA.

4.AstudentwillbepermittedtochangefrombranchAtobranchB,strictlyinCPIorder,ifshe/he (a) waseligibleforadmissiontobranchBatthetimeofentrytoIITBombay,and (b) strengthofbranchBdoesnotexceedthesanctionedstrengthbymorethan10%,and (c) strengthofbranchAdoesnotfallbelow85%ofitssanctionedstrength(equivalentlyat most15%studentsofsanctionedstrengthofabrancharepermittedtoleaveit).The requestofthisstudentwillbereconsideredagain,strictlyinCPIorder,ifshe/hedoes notviolaterule4(b)and4(c)duetoanotherstudentgettingtransferredtobranchA.

5. Forotherstudents,requestforchange,strictlyinCPIorder,fromastudentfrombranch AtobranchBwillbeconsideredifthe (a) StrengthofbranchBdoesnotexceedthesanctionedstrengthbymorethan10% (b) StrengthofbranchAdoesnotfallbelow85%ofitssanctionedstrength(equivalentlyat most15%studentsofsanctionedstrengthofabrancharepermittedtoleaveit).The requestofthisstudentwillbereconsideredagain,strictlyinCPIorder,ifshe/hedoes notviolaterule5(b)and5(c)duetoanotherstudentgettingtransferredtobranchA.

6. IfastudentS1isnotpermittedtochangefrombranchAtobranchB,duetorules3,4or5, anyotherstudentS2withCPIlessthanS1willalsonotbepermittedtochangetobranchB.

7. (a). Therules3to6areapplicableforallcategorieswiththeconcessionineligibility criteriamentionedinrule1forSC,STandPDstudents. (b) Everystudenthasabirthcategoryattribute,whichisoneofGE,OBC,SC,STorST. (c) Avacantseatthatisavailableforallocationisdefinedtobeoneofsixdifferent types.Thetypesarei)open,ii)reservedforGE,iii)reservedforOBC,iv)reserved forSC,iv)reservedforSTandvi)reservedforPD. (d) Theadditionalseatsinabranch,limitedtomaximumof10%ofitssanctioned strength,thataremadeavailabletostudentsforallocationatthetimeofchangeof brancharedefinedatthestartoftheallocationprocesstobeoftype"open"innature (donotbelongtoanycategory).Theremayalsobeafewvacantseatsoftype "reservedforcategoryX"atthispointintime. (e) AvacantopenseatinBranchB,whenallocatedtoastudentinbranchAbelongingto birthcategoryX,createsavacantseatinbranchAoftype"reservedforcategoryX". (f) Avacantseatoftype"reservedseatofcategoryX"isavailableforre­allocationonly tostudentsofbirthcategoryX.

8.Allbranchtransferscanbeeffectedonlyonceatthebeginningofthesecondacademicyear.No applicationforchangeofbranchduringthesubsequentacademicyearswillbeentertained.

9.StudentswillbepermittedtochangefromB.Tech.toDualDegreeProgrammeinthesame departmentattheendofthirdandfourthsemesterssubjecttothedepartment’srecommendation. ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­
