Dear Sangeetha,

The transition metal form a great number of composite compounds in which the metal atoms are bound to a numeral of anions or neutral molecules. In the current vocabulary such compounds are known as coordination compounds. The chemistry of the coordination compounds is the essential and challenging area of current inorganic chemistry. Organization compound also acquire a collection of applications in electroplating, textile dyeing and medicinal chemistry.

Alfred Werner theory, a Swiss chemist was the major contributor to devise his ideas about the construction of coordination compounds. He prepared and characterized a great number of ordination compounds and considered their physical and chemical properties behavior by easy experimental method. Werner theory designed the idea of a major valence and a derived valence for a metal ion. Double compounds such as CrCl3, CoCl2 or PdCl2 have main valence of 3, 2, and 2 correspondingly. In a sequence of compounds of cobalt chloride with ammonia, it was originate that same of the chloride ions could be precipitated as AgCl on adding that some of the chloride ions could be precipitated as AgCl on adding excess silver nitrate solution in cold but not some remained in solution. These comments together with the consequence of conductivity measurements in solution can be explained. In coordination compounds metal show two classifications of linkage primary to secondary. The primary valences are usually ionization and are fulfilled by negative ions. The secondary valences are non ionization. These are content by neutral molecules or unconstructive ions. The minor valence is equivalent to the coordination number and is permanent for a metal. The ions/groups limits by the secondary connection too the metal has attribute spatial arrangements equivalent to different coordination number and is fixed for a metal.

Werner''s theory of aqueous ammonia is added to a solution of cobalt dichloride, CoCl2, a blue precipitate forms of the corresponding hydroxide, Co(OH)2, which dissolves on the addition of an excess of ammonia to give a solution that immediately begins to absorb oxygen and turn brown.
