Imbibition and diffusion are two different kind of processes, The major differences are as follows:

It refers to the movement of molecules, ions of solids, liquids or gases from the region of higher concentration to the region of lower concentration
It refers to the absorption of water by general surface.

It takes place in solids, liquids and gases.
It takes place both in living and dead cells.

It is not a reversible process.
It is a reversible process.
4.
No need of semi-permeable membrane.
An absorbent is involved but no membrane in it.
