Purple bacteriaorpurple photosynthetic bacteriaareproteobacteriathat arephototrophic, that is, capable of producing energy throughphotosynthesis.They are pigmented withbacteriochlorophyllaorb, together with variouscarotenoids, which give them colours ranging between purple, red, brown, and orange. They may be divided into two groups –purple sulfur bacteriaandpurple non-sulfur bacteria(Rhodospirillaceae). They evolve sulphur rather than oxygen during photosynthesis.
