The thylakoid lumen is a continuous aqueous phase enclosed by thylakoid membrane. It plays an important role for photophosphorylation during photosynthesis. during light-dependent reaction, protons are pumped across thylakoid membrane into lumen making it acidic down to pH 4.

frst of all u need to maintain a potential gradient beacuse the thyllakoid membrane is more having higher potential than thylakoid lumen . 
thus proton flow out from the thylakoid membrane through atp synthesis into the stroma , 
else atp cannot be formed .
