Dear student,

Since chlorine is present in the elemental form, its oxidation number is zero. This is because, oxidation number means that the number of electrons of either lost or gained by an atom of an element during compound formation.

If an atom gains electron, the oxidation number is negative; if it looses electrons then the oxidation number is positive and if its octet is complete, oxidation number is zero.
Thank you
