Respiration: the break down of sugar to release usable cellular energy (ATP)
Types

Aerobic: with oxygen
Anaerobic: without oxygen

All cellular respiration pathways begin withglycolysis

Definition: thebreakdown of glucose
Overall reaction: Glucose + 2 ATP -> Pyruvate + 4 ATP

Anaerobic cellular respiration (fermentation)

Alcoholic Fermentation:

Pyruvate -> Acetaldehyde + CO2(decarboxylation)
Acetaldehyde + NADH -> Ethanol + NAD+

Lactic acid fermentation:

Pyruvate + NADH -> Lactic acid + NAD+
Occurs in muscle cells during oxygen debt
Can be reversed in the presence of oxygen
