Can we say whether a cell is living or dead basing on the presence or absence of protoplasm? If it is so tell whether vessels of Xylem are living or not as in the case of tracheids?

Protoplasm refers to the complete material inside the cell excluding plasma membrane. It includes cell organelles, cytoplasm and all living materials. So,the presence of protoplasm indicates that a cell is living or dead.
