The crops consisting of any alien gene or genes from other source are known as Genetically modified crops or Transgenic crops. Bt cotton (transgenic crop) is one of them. Bt stands for a bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis. This bacteria contains a gene called CRY gene on plasmid which produces a crystal protein. This crystal protein is actually toxic to the pests and insects as they destroy them by making perforated gut which results in the death of pests.
