basically equivalent class of an element ‘a’ belonging to a set A on which an equivalence relation R is defined, is the set of all elements x belonging to A such that a and x are related
(a,b)R(c,d) iff ad(b+c)= bc(a+d)
given (a,b)= (3,4)
we have 3d(4+c)= 4c(3+d)
or 12d + 3cd= 12c + 4cd
or 12d= cd+12c
or d(12 – c)= 12c
or d= 12c/(12 – c)
since c and d are both natural nos, 12 – c must be greater than 0 or c must be less than 12
so c belongs to {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11}
when c=1, 2, 5, 7, then clearly d is not natural.
hence, equivalence classes of (3,4) are:
(3, 4); (4, 6); (6, 12); (8, 24); (9, 36); (10, 60) and (11, 132).
