Dear student

when x belongs to ( – infinity, 1) U (1, infinity)

x^4 – x^2 + 2 > x^4 – x^2 + 2

which is incorrect.

when x belongs to [-1, 1]

x^4 – x^2 + 2 > x^4 + x^2

2 x^2  less than 2

x^2 less than 1

hence x belongs to ( -1, 1)

hence a= 1 and b = – 1

so a^2 + b^2 = 2
