( 1 + i)^2 = 1 – 1 + 2i = 2i
similarly
(1 – i)^2 = 1 – 1 – 2i = – 2i
now
(sqrt(2))^8n + (sqrt(2))^8n = 2 * 2^4n = 24n +1
