Let us say the purses are denoted by xi. I stand for purse number. Now variable xi can take values 1 2 3.so you have to find the number of solutions ofx1+x2+........+x12=12 subject to the mentioned condition. It is equivalent to finding coefficient of x^12 in (x+x^2+x^3)^12. Which can be found with little calculations.
