let the intersection point be (x,0)
and the ratio be k:1
then apply section formula and u get,
2+6k=0
k=-1/3
hence the join is cut externally in the ratio 1:3 ANS.

let the pt in x-axis be (h,0)

let the ratio be k:1

(-3,2)------------------(h,0)--------(4,6)

               k                          1

from section formula for y-coordinate

0={6k+1(2)}/{k+1}

ie,k=-(1/3)

-ve sign indicates that (h,0) divides the line externally

Hence ,x-axis divides the join of pts in the ratio 1:3 externally

the join of (x,y) and (p,q) is cut by x-axis in the ratio -y;q  because on x-axis y-coordinate is 0                                                                                               y-axis                 -x;p               on y-axis x-coordinate is 0
