[2n - 1 - (-1)^(n+1)] / 4

n minus a-sub-n is always [n/2 + (either 1/2 for odd n's, or 0 for even n's)].

The formula for alternating 1/2's and 0's is (1 - (-1)^(n+1)) / 4.

So the the formula is n - (n/2) - [(1 - (-1)^(n+1)) / 4]
