Taking the distance from the fixed point in the directions shown asx_1,x_2,x_3,

we havex_1+2x_3+x_2=constant

Differentiating the expression with respect to time,

-a_1+2a_3+a_2=0
\implies a_3=\dfrac{a_1+a_2}{2}
