Humans are called heterotrophs because they cannot produce their own food and must rely on consuming other organisms (plants, animals, fungi, or bacteria) to obtain energy and nutrients. The term "heterotroph" comes from the Greek words hetero- meaning "other" and troph meaning "nourishment." This contrasts with autotrophs, such as plants, which can produce their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis. Heterotrophs depend on organic compounds from other living things for sustenance and energy.
