When bromine is diffusing in air, bromine molecules constantly collide with other molecules in air and that slows down the process of diffusion, so it takes it much more time to completely diffuse. Vacuum is an empty space, therefore bromine molecules don't collide with other molecules, so they travel much faster.

That means it would even occur to mercury I am asking about diffusion in air
