  • Based on the number of layers, epithelia are mainly of three types, simple, stratified, and pseudostratified.
  • Based on the cell shape, epithelia are of three types, squamous, cuboidal and columnar.
  • Various combinations of the above mentioned six types of epithelia are found in various locations of the body, each serving some unique function.
  • Cells of squamous epithelium having wavy outlines comprise what is called the tessellated epithelium. For example, the epithelium lining the blood vessels.
