Sulphur is a p-block element and it has 6 valence electrons located in its outermost orbit and it contains a total 16 electrons. It is characterized as a non-metal . Step by step solution: Sulphur is a non-metal because it is consistent with three physical properties listed for non-metals. It is a poor conductor of heat and electricity, because electrons are not free to move. An element that becomes an ion must have free room for its electrons to move and to create an electric charge. Sulphur’s electrons are very tightly held and cannot move around therefore it is more of an insulator. Since sulphur is dull and brittle in solid form, and this again tells it is a poor conductor, because it is harder for electrons to move around when they are packed tightly as a solid. It has very high electronegativity because it is able to gain electrons very easily. So, from the above statements we can say that sulphur is not a good conductor of electricity and heat. So, the given statement is false. Note: Sulphur in ionic form conducts electricity, because their ions are free to move from place to place. Ionic compounds in solid form cannot conduct electricity.
