The Richter scale is a logarithmic scale used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake. It quantifies the energy released by an earthquake by measuring the amplitude of seismic waves recorded by seismographs. The Richter scale was developed by Charles F. Richter in 1935 and is widely used by scientists and seismologists to compare and categorize the strength of earthquakes. Each whole number increase on the Richter scale represents a tenfold increase in the amplitude of the seismic waves and roughly 31.6 times more energy release.
