C. Excessive use of man-made compounds containing both chlorine and fluorine

The depletion of the ozone layer is primarily caused by the release of man-made compounds called chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which contain chlorine and fluorine atoms. These compounds were commonly used in refrigeration, air conditioning, aerosol propellants, and foam-blowing agents. When released into the atmosphere, CFCs can rise to the stratosphere, where they are broken down by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This breakdown releases chlorine atoms, which then react with ozone (O3) molecules, leading to the depletion of the ozone layer. This depletion allows more harmful UV radiation from the sun to reach the Earth's surface, which can have detrimental effects on human health and the environment.
