Hint: Ozone layer is a layer of ozone gas in the stratosphere and protects us from UV rays coming from the sun. Ozone gas is unstable then continuously ozone gas is produced by oxygen and UV rays. When UV rays fall on oxygen gas it is converted into an oxygen atom then this oxygen atom combines with another oxygen gas molecule and forms ozone gas. But fluorine or chlorine gas reacts with ozone and destroys it. Complete step by step answer: We know that CFC (chloro-floro-carbon) gas is used in refrigerators and this gas contains fluorine and chlorine, and is quite stable. Due to its stability it reaches the stratosphere. The Ozone layer is present in the stratosphere, and we also know that ozone molecules are less stable due to which they react with fluorine and chlorine. Then fluorine and chlorine destroy the ozone layer. Fluorine and chlorine react with ozone and convert ozone gas into oxygen gas and a single fluorine or chlorine molecule can destroy thousands of ozone molecules. Hence, the Ozone layer is getting depleted because of excessive use of man-made compounds containing both chlorine and fluorine. Hence option C is correct. Note: If the ozone layer is depleted then UV rays enter the earth atmosphere which is harmful for all living beings. This causes global warming, increase in the temperature of the earth, many diseases, etc. UV rays are continuously reflected by the ozone layer and the ozone layer saves us from the harmful UV rays.
