Friction is a force which opposes relative motion between two bodies. It comes in play when 2 surfaces are in contact due to the roughness between the surfaces.  Friction only opposes relative motion it prevents the body from sliding if you think That friction stops motions no thats not always correct as you cannot walk without the help of friction. 
There are manly static friction,kinetic/sliding friction, rolling friction 
Friction is a self adjusting force. 
Static friction comes in action when the body does not move inspite of force applied on it or it is in condition of just moving. The friction in this case adjust itself as force applied. But when the value of force is more than the max value of friction the body starts moving. This max value of friction is limiting friction. Whereas kinetic friction comes in play is when body is moving. Rolling friction is in case of bodies in circular motion like tyres of car. When tires roll rolling friction exists.
