If you kindly go through the properties of magnetic field lines, you will find that the magnetic field lines tend to contract longitudinally. this is why the magnetic field lines going longitudinally between two opposite poles tend to contract and they attract each other.
on the other hand, the magnetic field lines laterally exert pressure on each other. hence they repel each other.
