Here are two common adaptive features of a polar bear that help it stay warm in Arctic conditions.

Thick fur coat

Description: Polar bears have a dense underlayer of fur topped by long, oily guard hairs. This double layer traps air and provides excellent insulation against freezing temperatures.

Why it helps: The trapped air reduces heat loss from the skin, and the oily outer hairs shed water and help prevent heat loss after swimming.

Layer of fat (blubber)

Description: Beneath the skin, polar bears have a thick layer of fat that can be several centimeters to over 10 cm deep, depending on the season and the bear’s condition.

Why it helps: The blubber stores energy and acts as an insulating barrier, keeping the bear’s vital organs and core temperature stable in icy environments.
