Distance is the length of the actual path taken by an object whereas displacement is the shortest distance between the initial and final points of the path taken by an object.
For example, imagine a train moving in a circular track. After the train completes one full circle in the track, the distance travelled by the train in the given time is not zero but the displacement is zero.
