Litmus papers show appreciable colour changes in acids and basic mediums and with different pH. So they are used as indicators.

Litmus is a water soluble mixture of different dyes extracted from lichens. It is absorbed onto a filter paper to produce one of the oldest forms of pH indiactor, used to test materials for acidity/basicity.

Because it gives characteristic colur in basic and acidic medium.In basic medium it turns bluish and in acidic medium it turns red.
