a living thing is composed of cell 
aliving thing can move from one place to other 
living thing can eat food and reproduce
all these are absent in non living thing and soil so so soil is non living thing

A living being is composed of cells. They grow in height etc. They eat food to gain energy and perform life activities. They show movements. They reproduce to extend their species. They have a definite life span.But soil doesn`t show any of the characteristics of living being. So it is considered as a non living thing

Soil is a non-living thing as it do not show any character of living things. It do not exist on the basis of life processes . Neither it is made up of cells not it move on its own from one place to another

soil is non- living thing because there are certain characteristics of living things which are not fullfilled by it as living things contain cells , can move, can eat,breath,reproduce,etc.

An organism or a thing should fulfill all the characteristics of a living organism to be considered as living.
A living organism is made up of cells, show movement, grow, need food and nutrition, breathe or respire, excrete, reproduce, have definite life span and respond to stimuli. Soil does not fulfill any of these characteristics of living organisms.So, they are considered as non-living things. They are abiotic components.
